Partizan Belgrade survived the concession of a two-goal lead on the night to eliminate RSC Anderlecht 3-2 on penalties and reach the UEFA Champions League group stage for the second time. The first time was in 2003 when they defeated Newcastle United.
Partizan had taken a deserved lead on fourteen minutes when Ivica Iliev swung in a corner, which was headed home at the near post by the competition's top-scorer Cleo as he got in front of Ondrej Mazuch.
However it paid off as eight minutes into the second half, Cleo doubled the ead. Kamikaze defending from Paarswit left the Brazilian unmarked at the far post and he took the ball down before slotting past Silvio Proto.
He may not have had much joy in the first 150 minutes of this tie but Romelu Lukaku hauled his side back into the tie on 64 minutes with a beautifully cushioned header from Jan Polak's center past a haphazard Radisa Ilic.
The Champions League may yet be in its infancy however Guillaume Gillet staked an early claim for goal of the season when he chested the ball down before volleying over Ilic into the net to almost lift the roof off the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium.
With chances scarce in extra time, the tie drifted towards penalties, where Suárez, Biglia and Boussoufa fired their efforts over the bar. Despite Proto saving from Mladen Krstajić and Davidov, Partizan advanced to Thursday's draw, leaving Anderlecht with the consolation of a place in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League.
